StartFund, Caritas Nyundo, and other partners visited survivors of disasters in Rubavu

StartFund, Caritas Nyundo Diocese, and TearFund visited the survivors of the 3rd May disasters that took the lives of 135 people and destroyed over 6000 houses countrywide.
The visit aimed at comforting and sympathizing with the displaced people in Rubavu due to the heavy and unusual rain that made Sebeya River and its affluent flood and make people from Kanama, Nyundo, and Rugerero sectors become internally displaced and temporarily camped in Rugerero, Nyemeramihigo temporary camp.

The displaced people receive various support from the government and its stakeholders including Caritas Rwanda, Nyundo Diocese.

Caritas Rwanda, Nyundo Diocese, through Trocaire alongside other stakeholders such as AEE and DUHAMIC ADRI, have received a donation of 300,000USD  from StartFund and supported the most vulnerable survivors to afford the rent of the houses as their own ones were totally demolished.

AEE operates in Nyabihu Ditrict while DUHAMIC ADRI implemented the project in Rutsiro District, these two districts also experienced disasters of landslide and river flooding.

Upon the visit, the donors appreciated how the aid was managed and used by the beneficiaries, as they are relieving and improving their daily lives, compared to how they were hopeless and pessimistic about their future when the catastrophic event hit.

The visitors also comforted the victims psychologically bringing back hope and optimism that after disasters life should continue, and in a decent manner.

According to the representative of Caritas Rwanda, Nyundo Diocese, priest Jean Paul Rutakisha a donation given to the affected citizens aimed at helping them to relieve after the catastrophic event they have experienced.

He said" This project was sponsored by StartFund through Trocaire, we have helped 459 families to get housing rent. We used the cash transfer method on their own Mobile Money telephone. We have allocated in this project Rwf48M in total."

" We really thank our donors, and partners who have made this project possible, we pledge to continue helping the needy citizens so that they live a descent life and  get rid of this aftermath."

Each family was provided with Rwf105000 for a three-month rent, meaning that one month will cost the family Rwf35,000.
Priest Rutakisha added that they have also helped those families whose houses and properties were destroyed but preferred to remain in other non-affected families instead of going in temporary camps.
These ones were provided also with cash to rent houses which is nearly 38,000USD, families of 57.

Beneficiaries are grateful for that benevolent initiative as many of them have lost almost everything, apart from their lives
