RDF in Central African Republic: A Symbol of Excellence in Security and Development
On Thursday, March 6, 2025, a high-level delegation from the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF), led by the Commander of Land Forces, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi, visited the Central African Republic (CAR) to enhance cooperation with the United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA). The delegation, which included RDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Ronald Rwivanga and Director of Training in the RDF, Lieutenant Colonel Laurent Kabutura, visited the MINUSCA headquarters in Bangui and met with its Commander, Lieutenant General Humphrey Nyone.
The visit was preceded by a trip to the RWANBATT 2 peacekeeping battalion stationed in Bossembele, where RDF troops are working tirelessly to maintain peace and security in the country. Lieutenant General Nyone commended the professionalism and dedication of Rwanda’s peacekeepers, highlighting their unique role in the region. He specifically praised the RWANBATT 1 team for their critical role in safeguarding the security of the country’s head of state, noting, “To be selected to protect the President of a country is a significant responsibility, and it speaks volumes about the trust placed in Rwanda’s peacekeepers.”
RWANBATT 2, which is responsible for securing areas leading into the capital, Bangui, also received accolades from the MINUSCA Commander. “RWANBATT 2 is the backbone of our operations here. They are critical to maintaining security in the capital’s entry points, and their performance has been exemplary,” said Lieutenant General Nyone.
During his visit, Major General Nyakarundi delivered a message from President Paul Kagame, who is also the Supreme Commander of the RDF, expressing gratitude for the dedication of the peacekeepers in ensuring peace and stability in the Central African Republic. President Kagame’s message also recognized the contributions of RWANBATT 2 in not only maintaining security but also participating in community development activities such as Umuganda (community service) and providing free medical assistance to the local population.
The RDF peacekeepers, under the banner of MINUSCA, are not only performing critical security duties but are also involved in humanitarian efforts. Their work includes providing essential services to the local population, which has earned them immense respect and admiration from the Central African government and its people.
As the RDF continues to play a pivotal role in peacekeeping operations, their contribution to maintaining peace in CAR is a testament to Rwanda’s unwavering commitment to global peace and security. The ongoing efforts of Rwanda’s peacekeepers in CAR provide a valuable example of how military forces can contribute to both security and development, creating a safer and more stable environment for future generations.
This visit underscores the strong partnership between Rwanda and the United Nations, highlighting the role of the RDF in international peacekeeping efforts and their commitment to promoting peace, stability, and humanitarian support across the globe.
